East End House: Key Projects needing Volunteer Support

Middle School Programming: East End House and the Kennedy/Longfellow School, in collaboration with the Cambridge Public Schools and the City of Cambridge Department of Human Service Programs, have developed a comprehensive program for middle school youth. It launched in the fall of 2008 and has over 85 youth enrolled. It meets a pressing community need for out of school time programming for this population. The overall philosophy is to develop engaging programming that inspires leadership through youth designed and led initiatives, empowers youth to create their own learning experience through an extensive choice-based schedule, utilizes the unique talents and interests of the staff to create an environment that allows for free expression of ideas and concerns, provides youth with academic and social supports, and engages students in stimulating activities.

Volunteer Needs:

  • Help youth with homework
  • Guest speakers to lead discussions and projects
  • Host youth at your workplace

One-on-One Mentoring: In order to provide an added layer of support for middle school youth most at-risk based on academic, family, or behavioral factors, East End House is developing a one-on-one mentoring program that will begin this summer. It pairs community volunteers from local businesses, universities, and retired individuals in the community, with a middle school student. Mentors will spend at least 4 hours a month with their mentee in the context of the middle school program, at their workplace, or in the community (i.e. sporting events, movies, etc.). Mentors will receive ongoing training and support around building a positive relationship with youth. The program will be documented and evaluated by Jean Rhodes and her team at UMass Boston and best practices disseminated to others in the field.

Volunteer Needs:

  • Mentors willing to spend at least 4 hours per month with a child
  • Volunteers willing to host groups of mentors and mentees at their workplace

Generation and Evaluating New Adventures in Science After School (GENASAS): This innovative program builds on the success of the Life Science and Math Enrichment Initiative that has been a part of the School Age curriculum since 2003. GENASAS enhances current science curriculum in a way that helps youth see science come to life through robotics, dissections, and much more. Partnerships with local biotech companies also give youth opportunities to hear guest scientists speak and visit labs to see how the concepts they are learning in school are applied in real world settings. The goal is to frame science in a new and more exciting way for youth and open their mind to the possibility of careers in the field. GENASAS will also expand science, technology, engineering and math curriculum to our Child Care Program. The program will be documented, evaluated, and disseminated by Program in Education, Afterschool, and Resiliency (PEAR), a group out of Harvard University and McLean Hospital who are experts in out of school time science programming.

Volunteer Needs:

  • Guest speakers to talk about careers in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) sector
  • Host youth at STEM businesses or relevant sites at universities
  • Lead projects and/or classes on specialized STEM topics

Emergency Food Program & Community Programs:

Helping families and individuals meet their basic needs is a priority. East End House’s Food Pantry provides food to over 150 households each month. We have seen a dramatic increase in the past few months in new consumers seeking assistance. Our Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Basket Giveaway served over 750 families this year, as opposed to 450 last year. In order to serve those who cannot come to the Food Pantry because of limited mobility, East End House holds the Free Farmer’s Market at two low-income housing complexes for seniors and disabled individuals. We bring fresh produce, cheese, meat, and non-perishable foods to the housing complexes and offer entertainment in an effort to build community. In order to meet the needs of new and expecting parents, the Infant Necessities Program provides those struggling to make ends meet with diapers, bottles, formula, and other items babies need to thrive. In addition, the Community Programs office offers referrals to other agencies, government benefit eligibility screening and assistance with the applications, as well as workshops on topics such as tax preparation.

Volunteer Needs:

  • Hand out food at the Pantry (Tues. 9-2; Fri. 9-12)
  • Help at the Free Farmer’s Markets (first Mon. and Wed. of the month from 9-12)
  • Lead workshops on relevant issues
  • Volunteer groups to help paint, clean, plant, and beautify the building

Child Care and School Age Programs: In order to support working parents, East End House offers nationally accredited Child Care and School Age Programs at affordable rates. We are the only School Age Program in Cambridge to be accredited. The Child Care Program operates for the full day throughout the year. Children from 15 months to 5 years spend the day engaging in enriching activities that promote the development of early literacy skills, social skills, and school readiness. The School Age Program runs for four hours each day during the school year and for the full day during summer months and school vacations. Children choose from a variety of enriching activities, including engaging science classes, art classes, sports, and cooking. There are also a variety of field trips, including those to local companies, universities, and museums.

Volunteer Needs:

  • Read to children or assist with classroom activities in the Child Care Program
  • Help school age children with homework
  • Host school age children at your workplace
  • Run special workshops for the children (i.e. dance, computers, etc.)
